About The Position and Our Practice
The University of Rochester Division of Midwifery is seeking to add a faculty midwife to our growing university based practice. You will join 14 other midwives in providing care to a large community of families in and around the Rochester and Finger Lakes, N.Y. region. We are a longstanding, autonomous practice with a strong reputation both in the community and in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. All midwifery staff are faculty appointed in the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and are expected to contribute to clinical education and demonstrate a commitment to academic work. The midwives in the Midwifery Division attend approximately 600-650 births per year and conduct over 11,000 outpatient visits across two outpatient sites. This position offers a myriad of opportunities to enhance practice through education including participation in research. The University Midwifery Group remains dedicated to preserving a midwifery approach to care to diverse patient populations supported by rich professional and academic resources, including supportive and collaborating relationships with generalist OB/GYN, maternal fetal medicine and specialist providers. Opportunities within the Division include but are not limited to CenteringPregnancy, participation in hospital wide committees, authorship for nationally recognized continuing education, family planning services, colposcopy, and preceptorship for midwifery, nurse practitioner, medical students as well as resident education (didactic and clinical).
The responsibilities of this position include the provision of full scope clinical midwifery services within the framework of an academic medical center. We provide inpatient care (independent and co-management of labor and birth, triage and postpartum care) for the patients of our Division at Strong Memorial Hospital, where our patients have access but are not limited to hydrotherapy, nitrous oxide, and low intervention birth, assisted by staff very supportive of the midwifery philosophy. In addition, the Division provides attending faculty coverage of the low risk birth unit working alongside first year obstetrics and gynecology residents teaching normal labor and birth. Outpatient services include providing prenatal care (including CenteringPregnancy), well-woman primary and gynecologic care, family planning services, as well as opportunities to work within the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine helping to care for high risk women. The midwives at the University of Rochester is reputed for caring for adolescents for over two decades promoting the integration of multiple services within one program.
