Advanced Practice Registered Nurses / Physician Assistants
APPLY FOR YOUR DREAM JOB TODAY! Dar a Luz Birth & Health Center is looking for an experienced Certified Nurse Midwife to join our birth center team.
We have a big, bright vision for serving New Mexico families and if you share our passion for birth, babies, and empowering woman-centered care, we are looking for you. Join our 20-woman team that is dedicated to birth work through a sustainable business model.
Duties: Dar a Luz is quiet and relaxing with multiple suites for prenatal care and labor. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to holding space for the miracle of natural birth by providing empowering, compassionate, and holistic care. Because pregnancy and birth are normal events in a pregnant person’s life, birth center midwives support normal birth whenever possible. Dar a Luz midwives are independent providers who enjoy a truly collegial consulting relationship with local physicians.
The right CNM for our practice will join six experienced midwives as an integral part of the woman/pregnant person-centered care we provide. Our midwives are at the very heart of Dar a Luz’s service to clients. They provide the majority of clinic care and labor support. Each midwife has additional ongoing responsibilities such chart reviews, posting birth announcements to social media, contributing to projects, public outreach, and staff trainings. Each staff member wears many hats so you’ll have lots of opportunities to grow and use your special talents.
Dar a Luz has been at the forefront of the national birth center response to the novel coronavirus, with early proactive measures and guidelines to protect pregnant people, their babies, families, and our staff members. PPE is provided, and only healthy, lowrisk people are permitted to enter the building. All staff members have voluntarily accepted restrictions on their outside activities to limit exposure to coronavirus. Schedule: CNMs get to know all of our clients in the clinic and then they get to support some of them in labor and birth. You’ll work about 26 shifts per six-week rotation, and the shifts vary from 8-24 hours between clinic and call time. This works out to 3-4 days per week. Your clinic time will be spent providing pregnancy, postpartum, newborn, and well-woman care, and doing detailed charting on each visit. You’ll cover several weekday call shifts (24 hours) and two call weekends (Friday-Sunday) per six-week period. When you are on call, you will share first and second call duties with another midwife to ensure everyone stays rested. Call time is also spent supporting the clinic and anything else that comes up.
The lifestyle of a birth center CNM in a small practice is more flexible in some ways, but the call time can be demanding, and it works best if you have family and partner support. Midwives who are happiest at Dar a Luz tend to be optimistic and openminded, eliminate drama through proactive communication, strive for a balanced life for themselves and their coworkers, and enjoy the give-and-take of a close and supportive team.
About us: Dar a Luz is a unique midwife-operated practice in a non-profit freestanding birth center. Reminiscent of a bed and breakfast or day spa in the heart of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, we provide full-scope services for the management of low- and moderate-risk pregnancy and birth. Together we have found our passion supporting hundreds of expecting pregnant people each year, most of whom birth at the center and return for postpartum and neonatal care, lactation, birth control, support groups, annuals, and subsequent pregnancies. We have good relationships with local providers and hospitals in case a mom risks out or transfers in labor. We also collaborate with many other professionals in the community.
Dar a Luz opened in March 2011 with two midwives and a nurse, and in nine years we’ve grown to a staff of 20 and have caught nearly 1100 babies at the center. We helped to research and draft legislation for NM birth center licensure and were the first to obtain it. We are nationally accredited with the CABC, and support the AABC, NM Midwives Alliance, Breastfeeding Task Force, and many others. We created first-oftheir- kind collaborations with doulas, counselors, human milk banks, and many other community partners. The fulfilling work we do, the wonderful clients we attract, and the fun and positive work environment we’ve fostered make it an amazing environment to work in. We are deeply grateful to our staff, clients, and community, and proud to serve NM families! To learn more about Dar a Luz, visit www.daraluzbirthcenter.org.
